Veteran’s Day is almost here and what better way to say 'thank you' than by gifting a mortgage-free home? That's what one Central Texas family received on Thursday.

After years of constant moving, Purple Heart veteran Jonathan Acuña and his family can finally plant their roots.

“This is what I would call a life changing event,” Chief Operating Officer of Operation Homefront Robert Thomas said.

Acuña served as a military police officer. In 2009 while in Iraq, he was hit by a road-side bomb, injuring his back and legs.

“I can say from my experience, I have gone through a lot, scars aren't always going to show,” Acuña said.

He later received a Purple Heart for his service and this year medically retired with an honorable discharge.

Now, he holds one more title: homeowner.

Operation Homefront and Meritage Homes gifted Acuña, his wife Jessica and their two girls with a brand new house.

Stretching 1,562 square-feet, the family says the three-bedroom home is more than what they expected.

Every room was created with the four in mind, including their four legged friend with a dog-door per request of 8-year-old Jlynn.

"To just have people that come here every day and be like, 'hey we are building this home for a veteran, it's huge.' I don't even know how to explain it, it makes me happy on the inside that there are people out there. And for veterans, I hope to turn around and do the same thing for a veteran,” Acuña said.

Since the Homes on the Homefront started in 2012, they have placed more than 550 veterans and their families in mortgage-free homes.

“The real beneficiaries will be the two little girls. It's a wonderful house in a wonderful neighborhood, in a wonderful town with wonderful schools down the road, they are the big winners,” Thomas said.

On top of the three bedrooms, the home has two bathrooms, high-end appliances, flat screen TVs and a backyard playground.

“Just want to thank you for your service and your commitment to our country,” Meritage Homes Chairman and CEO Steve Hilton said.

The Acuñas plan to move in next month.
