Dell Diamond opening as vaccination site in Round Rock

At the moment, the vaccine is only being administered to those in Phase 1A and Phase 1B in Texas.

ROUND ROCK, Texas — Dell Diamond in Round Rock is now open as a vaccination site, the Round Rock Express announced.

The business club said that starting Friday, March 12, more than 2,000 coronavirus vaccines will be administered per day to residents who have signed up for appointments through Williamson County.

The new site is a partnership between Round Rock Express, Williamson County and Curative, a COVID-19 testing and public health services startup.

The site will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday through Sunday this weekend. After that, it will transition to being open weekdays from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. for the foreseeable future.

A spokesperson for Dell Diamond said that the site is open to residents of all Texas counties but anyone that wishes to receive a vaccine at the site must register for the waitlist through Williamson County at wilco.org. You do not need to be a Williamson County resident to register for the waitlist, but you must receive a shot.

Cristin Meehan, Curative's director of vaccine distribution in Texas, said at around 10 a.m. that less than 100 spots were still available for the day. By 11:20 a.m., all of the spots were full. Spots will soon open for Saturday and Sunday.

Round Rock Express said the northwest parking lot at Dell Diamond will serve as the registration area with vaccines being administered in the east parking lot.

"I think this is a closer step to kind of getting back to some normalcy. And look, we're just ready to play baseball. So, whatever we can do to help the folks out and get people involved, we are all for it," said Chris Almendarez, the president of Round Rock Express.

In Austin, the Circuit of the Americas is also open as a mass vaccination site for the surrounding counties. However, COTA has only been open on the weekends so far. Travis, Caldwell, Hays and Bastrop counties are working to give out the vaccines at the COTA drive-thru distribution. Leaders say they hope to eventually give out 50,000 doses each week.

At the moment, the vaccine is only being administered to those in Phase 1A and Phase 1B in Texas.

“Since the Round Rock Express was founded in 2000, passionately participating in the community has been a pillar of our organization’s core values. It is a true privilege to partner with Curative and Williamson County to use Dell Diamond as a mass vaccination site,” Almendarez said. “We are honored to play a role in helping Central Texans receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This collaborative effort will vaccinate thousands of residents a day."
