Wednesday marks 3 years since Haruka Weiser's death on UT campus

Last year, her killer, Meechaiel Criner, was sentenced to life in prison.

AUSTIN, Texas — Wednesday marks three years since the murder of a University of Texas student on campus.

Haruka Weiser died on April 3, 2016 after being attacked while walking through campus. In 2018, her killer, Meechaiel Criner, was sentenced to life in prison.

Since Weiser's death, UT leaders made changes on campus to keep students safe at night. For example, they added more lights and cut back vegetation in the area where Weiser was killed to improve visibility.

A walk was set to happen on campus Wednesday night to honor Weiser, but it has been postponed.
