Students at multiple Central Texas schools walk out for stricter gun laws

Students in Central Texas continued to rally for stricter gun laws after the shooting at a Florida high school that killed 17 people.

Students have been walking out of classrooms across the country since the Florida school shooting -- and Friday -- students at many local schools in Central Texas are joining the effort.

Here are the Austin ISD schools that had walkouts Friday:

  • Austin High School
  • Bailey Middle School
  • Covington Middle School
  • Eanes ISD
  • Fulmore Middle School
  • Gorzycki Middle School
  • O. Henry Middle School

Hill Country Middle School in Eanes ISD planned to walk out of class at 1:20 p.m.

Students walked out at Bailey Middle School at 10 a.m. and Anderson High School at 1:20 p.m.

At Anderson High school, the students congregated around a flagpole and held 17 minutes of silence in memory of the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting. Here's a live stream of the demonstration:

Austin ISD said students will be allowed to protest, won't be punished, and school will resume as soon as those 17 minutes of silence are up.

At Needville ISD, outside of Houston, the superintendent is punishing students with a three-day suspension if they walk out.

KVUE reached out to other Austin-area school districts and found there were no walk outs demonstrated at Bastrop ISD, Georgetown ISD, Lake Travis ISD, & Manor ISD. One walk out was conducted in Round Rock ISD at Pearson Ranch Middle School.

At Leander ISD, a number of schools conducted walk outs: Glenn High School (250 students), Running Brushy Middle School (50 students), Cedar Park Middle School (seven students), Leander High School (45 students), and Vandegrift High School (40 students). LISD officials said the students demonstrating at Glenn High School walked 17 laps around the school to honor the 17 victims in the Parkland, Florida shooting. All demonstrations within LISD finished before noon, the district said.

Hays CISD said several students discussed plans of a walk out, but sanctions were put in place by school administrators.

More walkouts are planned in the coming weeks - including a "national school walkout" on March 14 at 10 a.m.
