AUSTIN – A federal judge on Thursday sentenced a Mexican national to 18 months in federal prison for assaulting a deportation officer in February.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Hugo Baltazar-Ramirez, 23, pleaded guilty on March 29 to the assault charge. Baltazar-Ramirez was arrested Feb. 10 after assaulting the officer, and KVUE’s partners at the Austin American-Statesman report that he was the person arrested near U.S. 183 and Anderson Mill Road while driving to work.
Feb. 10 was the date of several Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids throughout the United States, during which 51 people were detained in the Austin area. The KVUE Defenders learned several days later that 28 of those did not have prior criminal convictions before their arrests by ICE.
The Department of Justice added in their release that the FBI conducted the investigation.
