AUSTIN – Austin Energy is warning customers after receiving a report of a possible phone scam targeting its customers.
The utility said someone claiming to represent Austin Energy called the customer, demanding payment of their utility bill with 30 minutes, or their power would be shut off. If they fell for the scam, the scammers would presumable ask for a credit card, gift card or bank account information to complete the “payment.”
City of Austin utilities do not call customers with cut-off deadlines, nor does it ask for credit card or wire transfer information over the phone. Austin Energy only accepts walk-in payments at the city’s two walk-in service centers or customer service counters at most Austin H-E-B stores, ACE Cash Express, Money Box, Fiesta Mart and Randall’s. Staff at those locations will ask to see the customer’s utility bill before accepting payment, Austin Energy added.
Those who receive such a call demanding payment, threatening to interrupt service or requesting credit card/bank account information are advised to hang up and immediately dial 3-1-1 or 512-974-2000 to report the incident. Additionally, those who have received one of these calls and are uncertain of their account status can call the City of Austin Utilities Customer Contact Center at 512-494-9400.
