Leander residents could see cut in property taxes

The Leander City Council approved the biggest proposed property tax rate cut in more than 10 years on Thursday.

LEANDER, Texas — The Leander City Council approved the biggest proposed property tax rate cut in more than 10 years on Thursday, Aug. 5. The proposed maximum rate would cut property taxes in Leander by 3.7 cents per $100 of taxable value.

Leander Finance Director Robert Powers presented the preliminary budget for fiscal year 2022 on Thursday. The city council set the maximum proposed tax rate to 49.9166 cents per $100 of property value due to “tremendous growth in existing property values.”

The current tax rate for fiscal year 2021 is 53.6867 cents per $100 valuation.

According to the meeting agenda, average taxable values for Leander residential properties in Williamson County increased by $31,454. For properties in Travis County, the increase was $42,878.

This will be the ninth year of rate reductions if officially approved, according to a report from Hill Country News.

The city council will host a public hearing on the tax rate for Fiscal Year 2022 on Sept. 2. The final vote is expected to take place two weeks later on Sept. 16.
