The annual "Chuy’s Children Giving to Children Parade" is Nov. 18 and roads will be closed in downtown Austin for much of the morning and early afternoon.
The closures will begin as early as 6 a.m. for the annual event, with the parade beginning at 10:45 a.m.
San Jacinto Boulevard will close between East Eleventh and East Fifteenth Streets at 6 a.m., with the Ann Richards/Congress Avenue Bridge closing at 8 a.m., and other street closures – including Congress Avenue between the bridge and the Texas Capitol closing at 9 a.m.
As roads are closed, crosstown traffic will still be allowed on 5th and 6th Streets until 9 a.m., and on Cesar Chavez Street until 10 a.m.
The parade itself is an annual toy drive benefiting Austin Police Operation Blue Santa, a charitable outreach effort started by two Austin police officers in 1972, who realized some families would not have gifts or food for their children on Christmas.
Parade attendees are encouraged to bring unwrapped, new toys to donate to children, ranging from infants to 14 year-olds. The parade will feature large, inflatable balloons, marching bands, holiday floats, live music, and more.
