Coloring club pflourishes at Pflugerville library

The Pflugerville library caters to more than just avid readers these days.

They have several unique programs for adults, including one that helps members stay inside the lines.

You might expect to see stacks and stacks of books and people reading them at the Pflugerville library.

But how about dozens of empty books? Empty coloring books that is.

"I don't answer my phone," said Dana Leary, a member of the Pflugerville Coloring Club. "I don't worry about what's on the email, I just sit down and color my pictures."

The club is Dana Leary's way of temporarily disconnecting from her life as a self-proclaimed domestic goddess and substitute teacher.

Sketching is not her subject of choice. Instead, she spends the first Monday of every month bonding with her neighbors.

"My art teacher in 8th grade told me to stop wasting paper," she added. "So that was probably the last time I drew a picture."

Bette McDowell is the Adult Services Librarian. She said, "We color and check-in with each other. Talk about what else we're doing; books we're reading, crafts we're doing."

She started the club a few months ago when coloring became the hot new hobby for adults looking for a way to relax.

McDowell runs the library's Pfab Lab. It's used by clubs with common interests from embroidery to bookbinding.

While her club's members all share the same hobby, Leary says the thing that makes it extraordinary is that their work is unique.

She added, "If you take this picture and photocopy it, each one of us would come up with a different combination of colors... there are no wrong answers."
