The Travis County Jail is welcoming some new inmates.

Last Friday they started their kitten program with the Austin Animal Center. Inmates who have earned special privileges get to learn how to care for the kittens.

Each kitten gets a team of three inmates to look after them. The program teaches them important lessons, such as the value of working together. The animals also help with morale.

"It's changed their lives," said Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez. "It comes at a great time during the holiday season."

The cat program follows the Travis County dog care program, which has existed for a while.
