During last's year's holiday season, over 2,000 alcohol-related crashes in Texas were reported, killing 82 people.
In total, one in four deaths on Texas roadways were alcohol-related incidents, which is why the Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to plan ahead of time this holiday season.
The TxDOT "Plan While You Can" campaign encourages drivers to coordinate a sober ride as part of their holiday festivities.
TxDOT Executive Director James Bass discussed the negative effects of drinking and driving.
"We need to remember that each time someone dies or is seriously injured on our roadways, it affects a family and others. Make a plan to get home safely. It could save lives," Bass said.
Some alternatives to driving drunk include:
- Designating a sober driver
- Contacting a cab or ride-share service
- Using mass transit
- Asking a friend or family member for a ride home
- Spending the night
This campaign will also include a statewide tour that will visit eight Texas cities during December and feature an interactive dodgeball game that shows participants how drinking can hinder their reaction times as on-screen avatars.
