KVUE Sports Director Mike Barnes has been at KVUE since 1989, and he interned at the station in 1987 and 1988 while in school at the University of Texas. He is the longest tenured television sportscaster in Austin, and has covered numerous bowl games, March Madness, the College World Series and Super Bowls.
Mike’s favorite assignments are Friday Football Fever and Texas Tailgaters. Those KVUE shows air during football season in the fall and put a spotlight on high school teams and the Texas Longhorns.
Mike is a native of the Dallas area, growing up a huge fan of the Cowboys and Rangers, and he still has family there. His wife, Kim, is a former KVUE News anchor. And his kids, Brandon and Taylor, have grown up around the station.
Mike has won numerous awards in his years at KVUE, including the AP Award for Best Sports Anchor in Texas in 2015. He’s been named Best Sportscaster by the Austin Chronicle thirteen times!
